A reimagining of urban protest songs
John Legend And The Roots - Wake Up!

Once again proving himself a talented musician, John Legend comes together with The Roots for what is a soulful reimagining of 60’s and 70’s urban protest songs. We last heard this combined genius on ‘How I Got Over’, the ninth album from the Philadelphia based hip-hop group.

This time, the concept of political awareness reigns supreme, accompanied by some funkadelicious licks from The Roots' guitarist Capt. Kirk on the Les McCann and Eddie Harris hit ‘Compared To What’. A more appropriate title may have been ‘Hip-Hop Goes R&B’, the main reminder of our current decade coming from Black Thought’s lyrical waxing.
