Japancakes – Soon

A middle-finger type gesture to the purists

The latest release on cult shoegazing label Sonic Cathedral may well be its most eccentric to date.

Last year Athens, Georgia post rockers Japancakes caused an almighty ruckus on messageboards across the internet when they decided to cover My Bloody Valentine’s seminal “Loveless” album. The addition of pedal steel guitars and soothing dynamics left many a knicker in a twist – however, it stunned the Sonic Cathedral crew who have seen fit to bring it to a wider audience. As if that back story wasn’t convoluted enough, they’ve gone and remixed the tracks in a further middle-finger type gesture to the purists.

With the ethereal vocals ripped out the song seems to have more space to breath, and with James Rutledge’s beats to shake things up this single is far from the usual cover version routine. Updating the shoegazing template, “Soon” is a Technicolor treat for the ears chock full of the same sonic ambition that fuelled the original.
