Ibibio Sound Machine – Pull The Rope

A fiery return from the festival favourites...

Ibibio Sound Machine is a coming together point, a space for unity, and good vibrations. Ever since their self-titled debut album in 2014 the band have charged headlong into the future, melting together West African aspects, club electronics, and soulful vocals into something potent, and unique. ‘Pull The Rope’ emphasises their performance finesse, a fine return dipped in their trademark energy.

Opening with the title track, the unrelenting rhythms are a real statement, hauling you out of your seat and on to the dancefloor. The acid squelches on ‘Got To Be Who U Are’ are perfect for that song’s affirmations, while the sloping bassline behind ‘Fire’ has an almost post-punk directness.

The mid-section highlights some of Ibibio’s social concerns. ‘Them Say’ and ‘Political Incorrect’ push back against government darkness in our everyday lives, providing a much-needed space for freedom and protest while also radiating joy. ‘Mama Say’ connects Ibibio to West African lineages, and there’s a quiet moment of reflection here, with the UK authorities creating a profoundly hostile atmosphere in the background of their cherished art.

There’s nothing of that sort to be found on ‘Pull The Rope’, however.  Stalwarts Eno Williams and Max Grunhard continue to break new ground, the urgent alacrity of ‘Let My Yes Be Yes’ combining with the electro body-shock of ‘Far Away’ to provide some late album highlights.

Their first since 2022 effort ‘Electricity’, this new album pinpoints some of Ibibio Sound Machine’s singular charms, reflecting the band’s live energy back at them. A decade on from their debut, the band remain a force to be reckoned with, a noble fixture on the landscape of British music landscape.
