Having first announced his delicately poised strain of muffled R&B on debut ‘Love Remains’, it was on 2012’s follow-up ‘Total Loss’ (review) that How To Dress Well fully fine-tuned his wistful pop echoes to strike a winning balance between engaging melody and heartfelt lyricism.
‘What Is This Heart?’ is less of a bold statement than its predecessor, with Tom Krell’s marriage of dry ice production and intimate crooning void of any great advancement from previous outings.
Krell’s fragile innocence and tenderness remains as touching as ever, though, with a string of grand, sweeping numbers occupying the album’s heart that underline his power to galvanise the deepest depths of the soul.
