Born from a remarkable American road trip, ‘American Interior’ finds Gruff Rhys retracing the steps of 18th century Welsh explorer John Evans.
Hugely ambitious, the concept is married to Rhys’ still-wonderfully-affecting brand of folk-infused songcraft. The title cut is joyous indie-pop music, while ‘100 Unread Messages’ finds the songwriter musing on the weather.
A work of typically broad imagination, not everything on ‘American Interior’ fully clicks into place. Yet when it does, there’s more than enough to suggest that Rhys need not cease his eternal voyaging.
