Grace Jones – Hurricane Dub

An intriguing and ultimately winning companion

Grace Jones never does anything in the standard fashion – and this expansion of her 2008 comeback platter is no exception. Accompanying the nine-track ‘Hurricane’, an exotic blend of reggae, electronica, trip-hop, soul and industrial pop, is a second disc housing a brand new dub version of the album. It’s an intriguing and ultimately winning companion, one that feels like the soundtrack to a trek through a futuristic jungle. Her vocals may be chopped and looped by producer Ivor Guest, but Amazing Grace is no slave to the rhythm – here, her vampish contralto comes off like the cries of semi-mythical creature. Which, of course, she kind of is.
