With a new album Seventh Tree out shortly, Goldfrapp’s new single signals a return to the chilled-out atmospherics of their Felt Mountain album.
Actually A&E is more of a straightforward pop song than anything else. There’s an acoustic guitar that hints at an epic quality, pleasing and warm electronics and the eponymous Alison’s vocals are deep and sweet. Trouble is Goldfrapp were at their best when Alison was being a sex kitten with dirty electro tunes to match. Here the line “I’m in a backless dress” is as close as we get to that. Bring back the filth.
