From their jangly indie debut to their pop-infused sophomore album, Girl Ray are a band in a constant state of transition. Their new release ‘Prestige’ sees them take on disco, using catchy synths and funk infused guitar to bring a new vibe to their signature dreamy vocals.
Inspired by the freedom and inclusivity of New York’s 80s Queer Ballroom scene, the album is as much an ode to the group’s sonic predecessors as an opportunity to say something new. From the Nile Rodgers’ style guitar on ‘Everybody’s Saying That’ to the Yellow Magic Orchestra-esque vocals of ‘Give Me Your Love’, Girl Ray are clearly having fun with the music they make.
The album does meander at times, almost lost in its influences, but there are moments when Girl Ray really get it right. ‘Tell Me’ and ‘True Love’ are fantastically enjoyable tracks, capturing the essence and liberation of great disco. ‘Prestige’ is an album guaranteed to soundtrack some upcoming sunny days, imbued with fun and genuine passion in equal measure.
