If you’d never heard Future Islands and overheard their fourth album ‘Singles’, you might wonder to yourself when Rod Stewart had decided to front a synth-pop band, and why nobody had told you.
If you can get past singer Samuel T Herring’s rather theatrical, lion-like vocals, ‘Singles’ is a perfect album for when the weather is shifting into something resembling optimism.
With track names such as ‘Doves’, ‘Spirit’ and ‘Sun In The Morning’, you can imagine the sort of sweet, slow-building synths and jubilant drumbeats contained herein.
Herring’s growling vocals prevent proceedings from becoming too gloopy or nostalgic, and make ‘Singles’ a new-wave treasure.
