Glasgow band Frightened Rabbit’s previous single Be Less Rude was about easing tensions and haltings arguments, so it might not be a surprise to find their Christmas name-dropping single, treads similar ground. “Let the rot stop just for one day” they sing and the knives are put away and the simple, pretty music suggests a welcome armistice. But the hostilities are never really forgotten and jabbing strings add a sense of foreboding to the building drums and sure enough, “next day life went back to its bad self”. Beautifully frank festive grief.
