Foals – Cassius

A defiant line in the sand

The latest single from the hottest band in show business since The Beatles caught fire on the Ed Sullivan show.

Blending together angular math-rock and complex African rhythms is no mean trick – but Foals have done the impossible by smothering it in the kind of melody that makes housewives get out of bed in the morning. The presence of the Antibalas horns pushes things to the extreme, the echos of James Brown too difficult to ignore. “Cassius” will no doubt prove to be the anthem of the summer, with festivals across the country trying to solve their complex rhythmic equations. The latest single from the forthcoming “Antidotes” album, to say Foals are ahead of their contemporaries is like comparing nuclear physicists to a kid with a chemistry kit. Equal parts “Loaded” and library card, this cerebral dance-rock monster represents a defiant line in the sand by one of Britain’s most talented bands.
