It’s dangerous ground, electro pop. It can so easily throw out truly awful music, as displayed by one of the acts on at this week’s White Heat at London’s Madame JoJo’s. Let’s not mention any names; just imagine the Pet Shop Boys gone horribly, dreadfully wrong.
And onto Findo Gask.
Without again digressing, the point is that electro-pop’s sins, as great and far too profligate they are, are made up for by the quirky gems the genre occasionally beeps forth from a Casio keyboard somewhere. There’s always summat wrong about electro bands – nobody should want to spend that much time recreating the Buck Rogers soundtrack – but occasionally it’s more than worth it. Findo Gask are certainly that. Really enjoyable harmonious pop that oozes cool and enough camp aloofness to fill Mayfair, they are cracking.
Even when following the electro bible and leaving musical matters aside (although current single ‘one eight zero’ and their last, ‘Va Va Va’, are necessary to download), this band are tight as a duck’s behind live. Between singer Gerard Black’s posturing and mental keyboardist Pad’s backing, not to mention the rest of the oddities forming Findo Gask, they play a blinder. In fact, the only complaint is that there’s no dancing in the crowd. We all know you’re cool, but have a laugh for God’s sake people!
