Efterklang – Piramida

A subtle, startling work

Inspired by the band’s visit to Spitsbergen, a deserted island between Norway and the North Pole, ‘Piramida’ is like a wind-worn archaeological artefact. It possesses an air of resilience, of nature reasserting and returning to its inexorable processes. Field recordings harvest the sounds of the isle; percussive elements are wrestled from the sounds of stricken oil drums. An abandoned grand piano from the ghostly town hall chimes throughout, over samples like ancient kalimbas. This experimentation isn’t to the detriment of the music’s accessibility or beauty; these sounds coalesce into a seamless buoyant backdrop. As polished as a beach stone, it’s a subtle, startling work.
