If there seems to be a paucity of ideas in alternative music right now, it’s probably because William Doyle, the man behind East India Youth, is using all of them.
‘Total Strife Forever’ is an astonishingly bold and inventive record, seamlessly moving from post-rock to ambient to techno, and more in between, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
This is music that’s meticulous and expansive without ever falling into the trap of being boring or self-indulgent. It may be very early days, but it’s no exaggeration to suggest that ‘Total Strife Forever’ is the first truly great album of 2014.
