Duffy – Mercy

Another enticing dip back into soul history

Duffy’s second single has already reached number one in the UK thanks to download sales alone, so judgement has already been made by those still noble enough to pay for music.

It hardly matters what a promo-blagging reviewer thinks of it but for the record, Mercy is another enticing dip back into soul history for the Welsh singer. Where the magnificent Rockferry channelled Bacharach’s epic melancholy, Mercy has the simple indignance of the classic Chain Of Fools. Don Covay, writer of the latter, also wrote a song called Mercy, though Duffy’s is a superior tribute.
