Colourmusic – May You Marry Rich

Too often feels content to wallow in an amorphous sonic soup...

Where Oklahoma natives Colourmusic’s last LP, ‘My ___ Is Pink’ (2011), rambled charmingly all over the place, gleefully hopping from genre-to-genre, ‘May You Marry Rich’ is a more focused, sombre affair.

This set ditches the pop hooks, tribal drumming and ambient field recordings in favour of darkly psychedelic dirges. Party time!

There are moments of fragile, shimmering loveliness here, like ‘Silvertape’. ‘Snake In The Mouth’, meanwhile, is based around a naggingly insistent guitar riff.

‘May You Marry Rich’ recalls The Flaming Lips’ underrated ‘The Terror’ at times – but where previous Colourmusic albums were spiky, unpredictable things, this set often feels content just to wallow in an amorphous sonic soup.
