Cerrone – The Best Of Cerrone Productions

A substantial and surprising disco collection…

In his heyday, Marc Cerrone was a legend: a disco supernova who brought the sound of New York dancefloors to the European mainstream. His tracks filled the charts and infiltrated living rooms around the UK when The Kenny Everett Video Show adopted ‘Supernature’ as its theme. This two-CD compilation bungs his biggest hits alongside miscellanea such as tracks from his early band, Kongas.

It comprises a fine primer. The biggies are all accounted for, kicking off with the pulsing ‘Got To Have Lovin’’, taking in ‘Love In C Minor’ and ‘Supernature’, as well as lesser hits like 'Call Me Tonight'.

There is, undoubtedly, an element of cheese at work here. Cerrone’s music is saucy and playful and the sexual heat of the dancefloor is ever-present. But it’s when he wanders off these well-trodden paths and down shadier avenues that this set really sings.

The cuts from the Brigade Mondaine soundtrack are all minimalist synth arpeggios and spooked atmospheres. Frankly, it’s a wonder that Death Waltz hasn’t stuck them out on vinyl before now.

Slightly repetitive over the long haul, this still proves to be a substantial and surprising collection that proves that Cerrone was about more than just nudey ladies on his LP sleeves.

7/10
