Impressive first outing

With their second album ‘Primary Colours’, The Horrors elevated themselves from oftenridiculed fashionistas to critically acclaimed My Bloody Valentine acolytes. Now, frontman Faris Badwan has formed a band with Canadian Rachel Zeffira. Together, they create a spectral, filmic dreamworld somewhere between Mercury Rev and Bauhaus, with a healthy dose of ’60s sounds thrown in. The more twee songs verge on lullaby pastiche, but the darker, gloomier tracks, such as the slow-motion ‘Sooner Or Later’, ‘Face In The Crowd’ and the portentous yet seductive ‘Bandit’, work better, and go a long way to capture their Disney nihilism perfectly. Cat's Eyes is an impressive first outing full of sensuous dreamy atmosphere. Worthy.
