Daniel Snaith was forced to change his original recording name from Manitoba by another musician of the same name.
His new name Caribou suggests reindeer or Pixies but his music is way more Beach Boys than Black Francis. She’s the One is very technical and seems the product of many hours of perfection-attaining music making, like Brian Wilson. But Snaith’s is a much more sedate, less sunny surf rock. It veers from despair to vague optimism, with harmonies sweeping in and out, and the disparate moods are linked effortlessly. It’s all very elegant but it is perhaps more interesting than involving.
