Irmin Schmidt’s sleeve notes observe: “We are very unsentimental, and not very gifted for nostalgic emotions,” in what is presumably an attempt to bolster stereotypes as well as his objective-curatorial prowess. As Damo will gradually morph his annunciation to apply a panoply of meanings to the same phrase, in covering such an extensive time period this exhaustive rug beating raises more questions than it provides answers. ‘Scatty Motorik’ makes for timeless rock ‘n’ roll, whilst a conversation on the toilet shines a light on the drunk energy that drove the band. With both music and curation straying into increasingly beguiling territories ‘The Lost Tapes’ is as delightful as it is overwhelming.
