Having just celebrated his sixty-fifth birthday, can the old crooner still entertain? Renowned for covering other artists’ material, this is his first album of predominantly original material since 1994’s ‘Mamouna’.
There’s a distinct lack of commerciality as a result, but that’s a positive, with a sophisticated sound ably assisted by a host of guests, including David Gilmour, Jonny Greenwood and Flea. Net result is a healthy dose of blue-eyed soul that gets downright sleazy at times, with elements of funk, soul and blues and as much polish as it could soak up.
The Godfather of cool retains his title!
