Expansive and exploratory, powerful and hymnal

Opening with the frenetic blast of dexterous guitar licks and rapier percussion, AU’s third album’s introduction is an enthralling one. It’s a deceptive opener that’s at odds with the majority of an album that’s much less bombastic in sound but no less ambitious in its approach. Expansive and exploratory, powerful and hymnal, Luke Wyland’s vocal is a glorious mainstay. From the frolicking Beirut lilt of ‘Get Alive’ to the Shearwater dramatics of ‘Crazy Idol’, it characterises AU’s engaging ability to switch between the intimate and the towering with ease. So when it does ignite, the slow burn feels all the more glorious for it.
