Most suitable hosts

Ahead of their own new material, slated for a February 2007 release, and a collaboration with Jarvis Cocker and Charlotte Gainsbourg (surely any Francophile’s wet dream), Air have compiled the latest edition in the Late Night Tales series and show themselves to be more than suitable hosts for this luxurious get-together.

Given the atmospheric nature of their own music, it is no surprise how effectively they set the mood here, combining mainstream with oddities and mixing the expected (Scott Walker, Lee Hazelwood) with a couple of curve balls (Black Sabbath, The Band). There is of course the nod to their homeland, with the funky instrumental ‘Le Long de la Riviere Tendre’ from countryman Sebastien Tellier, but for the most part the artists here are English speaking albeit many not hugely well known. Air’s good taste in selecting those fringe acts lies in showing us the beauty we had forgotten or lost through over familiarity.
