Adele – Cold Shoulder

...as soulless as a Michael Bay film

There’s no denying the positive effect Mark Ronson has had on popular music.

His lush production work has helped introduce old soul flavours and big brass sections to a new generation raised on minimal beats and sparse melodies. But when it doesn’t work, such as this identikit assemblage on Adele’s latest single, the high concept, slick production seems as soulless as a Michael Bay film. As for Adele, granted she can sing but she sounds too much like an amalgam of other better singers and you wonder if you’ll ever hear a singer called Adele and not Mary J Winehouse.
