Next Wave #1187: Pretty Girl

In association with Bed Head for CLASH Issue 128...

In the dynamic world of electronic music, Pretty Girl, a multifaceted producer, vocalist and DJ, is making waves with her brand of emotive dance music. Raised in Australia, Pretty Girl has spent the past two years capturing the hearts of audiences globally; with sold-out headline shows and support from some of the biggest names in the scene, her presence is undeniable.

Pretty Girl’s music acts as a portal, inviting listeners into her world through a mix of trance-inflected house, UK garage, and techno, all enriched with her delicate vocals. Currently, she’s back in London for the summer season. “I’m a lot more motivated here,” she says. Her style of music is doused in tender-hearted feeling but she emphasises intention above all. “There doesn’t necessarily have to be an emotion for a song to be good. The best music is made with a goal, or an intention.”

Her journey began unconventionally. “I started playing live before I DJ’d. Someone asked me if I wanted to play a DJ set, but I couldn’t, so it turned into a live set,” she recalls. Releasing new EPs each year, Pretty Girl has steadily refined her sound and stage presence. “Everything feels natural. Over the years, I’ve learned what works for me and what doesn’t.” Her latest EP, ‘Get Back To Me‘, a testament to her growth as an artist, is a euphoric journey that showcases a more vibrant side of her music. “I wrote it when I was in London last year. I was having a lot of fun in my life, and that bled into the production process,” she explains.

In creating ‘Get Back To Me’, Pretty Girl sought to reconnect with her true self. “I had lost a sense of identity while on my journey to becoming a full-time musician. I wrote the EP to connect with myself – getting back to something that I love so much.” This quest for authenticity led her to draw inspiration from the dancefloor at Glastonbury. “I was watching Prospa, absorbing the performance and feeling the dancefloor’s energy. I wrote some of the lyrics to ‘Higher’ at that moment.”

Another track from the EP, ‘My Trust, My Love‘, transcends into new territory. “I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever made. It was important that I made bold production choices. It was fun for me, cause I wanted to break some rules.”
