Zella Day’s ‘Mushroom Punch’ Offers Personal Discovery

She bills it as “a psychedelic trip for the heart...”

It’s time to tumble down into the rabbit hole; Zella Day is serving up a twisted fairytale in a daze of heavenly alt-pop. ‘Mushroom Punch’ is the latest taste of forthcoming (October 14th, in fact) release ‘Sunday In Heaven’ and yet again highlights Day’s quirky, expansive songwriting abilities.

‘Mushroom Punch’ is a cocktail of timeless textures. With elements of gentle desert rock, a naively bouncy flow and weightless vocals, Day has crafted a track oozing an eccentric brand of liminality. The overall sound is like a mushroom cloud of melt-in-your-mouth psychedelic nostalgia.

Speaking on the track, Day has described the track as a “psychedelic trip for the heart.” This psychedelia undoubtedly gives the track its edge, a shimmering, misty haze devouring every note. The music video, directed by Sophie Muller, aims to amplify the track’s curiously unique sound.

New album ‘Sunday In Heaven’ is shaping up to be far more experimental and diverse than 2015’s ‘Kicker’. ‘Mushroom Punch’ follows on from a healthy slew of powerful singles; ‘Radio Silence’ captures that expansive, huge soundscape sensation, Day’s vocal is just as impassioned and distinctive as ever. ‘Girls’ takes on a much slower, purposeful sensuality. ‘Dance For Love’ is equally as spectacular, taking on more of a dance-able, quirky indie-disco feel. It seems Day is truly discovering themselves this time round, leaving no sonic stone unturned.

Tune in now.
