Chris Keating Talks

Chris Keating, frontman for leftfield rockers Yeasayer, announces his recent discoveries.

“I’ve been reading the autobiography of Malcolm X, and whether or not you agree with his politics it’s an amazing read. If it was fiction it would have been the best novel I’ve ever read. I mainly read non-fiction and for tours I maybe pick up five books that look interesting, and that was on sale. But I didn’t expect it to be such a page-turner.”

“An obscure movie is Short Eyes, that’s one of my favourites. It’s a prison movie, Curtis Mayfield’s in it, it’s based on a Miguel Pineiro play that he wrote in prison. It’s like a brutal, realistic, but kind of magical realism because there’s also a musical number. Curtis Mayfield’s amazing in it, he also does the soundtrack and that’s incredible too.”

“The Dirty Projectors’ CD, ‘Rising Above’, is really fucking amazing. They’re from Brooklyn, and their live show is awe-inspiring. I know for a fact that they practice until their fingers bleed, they’re in tears and they hate each other. They were the best thing at All Tomorrow’s Parties this year. I was almost in tears. In fact I was in tears, mostly because they’re so much better than me, and it’s my own ego being hurt.”
