Yannis & The Yaw Share Heavy Hitter ‘Under The Strikes’

With the late Tony Allen on drums...

Yannis & The Yaw have shared new single ‘Under The Strikes’.

The project is rooted in the life and legacy of Tony Allen, a supremely gifted drummer who became the beating pulse of afrobeat. Rightly lauded for his adventurous work with Fela Kuti, he kept working right to the end, on a range of fantastic projects.

The bass-heavy ‘Under The Strikes’ is the latest preview, and it’s an interesting fusion of afrobeat rhythms, electronics, spiky guitars, and some indie-leaning song craft.

Yannis comments…

‘Under The Strikes’ was inspired by walking to the studio during Paris’s refuse strikes, where trash was piled three stories high. I was fascinated by the idea that we were born into the greatest period of history and yet, things were disintegrating at the same time: we were finding the positives were mirrored by new lows and social disintegration.

So that’s the backdrop but there’s also a kind of coda at the end, a sense of farewell almost, which felt really poignant as it was the last thing we would work on of Tony’s.

Tune in now.

Catch Yannis & The Yaw at London’s KOKO on September 13th.
