Following earlier reports it has been confirmed that Wyclef Jean has officially registered to stand for president in upcoming elections in the earthquake hit Caribbean island of Haiti.
Jean was born on Haiti, moving to the United States at the age of nine and finding fame with hip hop trio The Fugees with his cousin Pras Michel and Lauren Hill. He then went onto to considerable solo success with tracks ‘Gone ’til November’, ‘Perfect Gentleman’ and, appropriately, ‘If I Was President’.
Stating that he was compelled to stand as president following the events which followed the earthquake which rocked the capital of Port-au-Prince in January, killing an estimated 250,000, Jean has since been involved in aid efforts to rebuild the stricken Country continuing his Haiti charity work which began with the setting up of his much criticised Yéle Haiti Foundation in 2005.
The Haiti presidential election is set to take place on November 28th.
