Newly released blockbuster The Batman makes prominence use of a Nirvana song.
Out now, the comic book vehicle features Robert Pattinson in the titular role, playing a traumatised Bruce Wayne in a battle of wits with Paul Dano's villain The Riddler.
Gaining critical plaudits for its gritty realism, The Batman is dominated by one particular song on its soundtrack.
The guitarist motif from Nirvana's 'Something In The Way' permeates the song, becoming a kind of plot device in itself.
Speaking to Esquire, director Matt Reeves comments: “Early on, when I was writing, I started listening to Nirvana, and there was something about [Nevermind song] ‘Something in the Way’, which is in the first trailer, which is part of the voice of that character.”
“When I considered, ‘How do you do Bruce Wayne in a way that hasn’t been seen before?’ I started thinking, ‘What if some tragedy happened [ie: Wayne sees his parents murdered] and this guy becomes so reclusive, we don’t know what he’s doing? Is this guy some kind of wayward, reckless, drug addict?’ And the truth is that he is a kind of drug addict. His drug is his addiction to this drive for revenge. He’s like a Batman Kurt Cobain.”
For his part, The Riddler actor Paul Dano pointed to the song as a key influence on his portrayal of the character during an interview with NME.
He said: “Well, in the script Matt had actually mentioned ‘Something In The Way’ by Nirvana. So that right there, that song, those words, that refrain, became hugely important to me. Nirvana became a part of that [character].”
