Weller Flouts Smoking Ban

Essex Venue Fined

The Cliffs Pavillion in Southend has received a warning after Modfather Paul Weller smoked onstage during a recent gig there.

The former Jam and Style Council star played the venue as part of his ’22 Dreams’ tour, promoting his eclectic recent album. It is alleged that Weller smoked while onstage, which can lead to penalties for the venue. Interestingly, an artist can claim it is part of their act and claim special dispensation in advance, but it seems that Weller simply fancied a cigarette.

“We think the law was breached so we have issued a warning,” local councillor Steve Ramm told the BBC.

“We considered the matter but under the terms of our enforcement policy, we have issued the warning to Southend Theatres Limited at this stage.

“If a similar occurrence were to take place in future, we would be likely to take further action.”

The Smoking Ban was put in force for England and Wales last year, with a number of rock stars being prosecuted for flouting the rules.
