American geek rockers Weezer could be set to go it alone, with rumours mounting of a split with their label.
Weezer are one of the most successful groups of their generation. Grabbing Pavement’s geek chic and adding a slick pop touch, the band have become globally renowned due to their hit singles and quirky videos.
Sure, they might never match ‘Pinkerton’ but in recent times Weezer have delighted fans by re-capturing the energy of their early recordings. With frontman Rivers Cuomo still recovering from a near fatal bus crash last year, the band seem to be re-evaluating their position on major label Geffen.
Releasing ‘Raditude’ last year, Weezer completed fifteen years on the major label. Sources close to the band have sparked rumours of a split, with American magazine Billboard reporting that the group could go it alone.
Rumours in the United States suggest that Weezer are planning to go independent, in the manner of British stars Radiohead.
Discounted by the band themselves, Weezer have stoked further rumours. Bass player Scott Shriner claimed that the American group are “always planning” something and hinted at the possibility of new material.
“We’re always planning and scheming something…” reports XFM. “We’re always working on some new music. I can’t really go into any detail about that yet, but we’re all writing and working on new stuff.”
Weezer have made no official announcement with regards to their future on Geffen.
