Canadian act Zeus recently shot a series of intimate live videos – watch the band perform ‘Kindergarten’ below.
The explosion of indie rock from Canada lends itself to certain clichés. Now, a new group from the Northern nation needs to wear plaid shirts, grow beards and become friends with Broken Social Scene.
Well, Zeus only have one of those three. Attached to Arts & Crafts, the Toronto band emphasise the broad nature of Canadian music.
Instead of earnest, 21st century strumming the band have a clear early 70s influence. There are shades of The Beatles – George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’ for example – alongside a Dylan-esque drawl.
The harmonies are sheer Power Pop, while those ringing open chords are reminiscent of The Byrds by way of Big Star.
Zeus recently flew over to London for a number of UK dates. Taking time out, the band shot a series of live clips, stripping their material back to little more than basic percussion, acoustic guitars and those effortless voices.
ClashMusic have obtained a live performance of ‘Zeus’. Powerful stuff, those high pitched harmonies can’t help but remind us of (early) Elton John. Follow The Yellow Brick Road? Don’t mind if we do…
