Watch The Smile Play New Song ‘Bending Hectic’ At Montreux Jazz Festival

Thom Yorke & Co. continue their creative run...

The Smile aired new song ‘Bending Hectic’ during their set at Montreux Jazz Festival.

The trio are on something of a roll, with their debut album earning ecstatic reviews on its release earlier this year. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood spearhead the project, with Tom Skinner – Sons Of Kemet – adding his own inimitable creative flourishes.

At the time of release, Clash wrote: “Brilliant stuff is still very much spooling out of Thom Yorke. His voice is revelatory on these tracks, better than ever, a peerless instrument; buttery and mellifluous in falsetto, snide and viperish on the growly bits. His magpie instincts for a tart one-liner remain razor sharp.”

“‘Don’t bore us, get to the chorus’ he intones on ‘Open The Floodgates’. But there’s a palpable desire to please on this record, too – a will to entertain. Who can resist the title, or Jonny Greenwood beating the shit out of his telecaster, on ‘You Will Never Work In Television Again’?”

The group have aired new – and so far unreleased – material during their live sets, and included a few surprises during their visit to legendary Swiss live event Montreux Jazz Festival.

Clash attended earlier in the month, and caught sets from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Bjork – amongst many others – illustrating the international heft that bookers at Montreux Jazz Festival can control.

The Smile rose to the occasion and included new song ‘Bending Hectic’ during their set – a lengthy, seven minute workout it shows their continuing creativity, and the nimble chemistry that exists between these three musicians, covering different genres, styles, and disciplines.

There’s no sign as yet of a release, but – as Thom Yorke notes on Twitter – The Smile are very much an ongoing creative endeavour.
