Watch: St Vincent Hits Conan

Pays tribute to Elvis Costello

St Vincent has breezed into Conan O’Brien’s chat show, performing a version of ‘Cheerleader’.

Annie Clark is something else. Deservedly reaching a wider audience with last year’s ‘Strange Mercy’ full length, St Vincent have managed to dent the mainstream without diluting their music in any way.

Dropping by Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show recently, Annie Clark was clearly in a confident mood. Backed by her live band – Toko Yasuda, Matt Johnson and Daniel Mintseris – St Vincent blasted through ‘Cheerleader’.

As a cheeky pop culture reference, Annie Clark opened with a few bars from the Elvis Costello classic ‘Radio Radio’. It seems that the British singer was invited to perform on Saturday Night Live back in 1977 – but with the proviso that he didn’t touch ‘Radio Radio’.

Always an irreverent spirit, Elvis Costello played the track anyway and earned himself the fury of the show’s bosses – and a 12 year ban from appearing on Saturday Night Live.
