Live in concert...

Patti Smith has covered Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep' during a concert in New York.

'Rolling In The Deep' must stand as one of the year's defining songs. Impossible to avoid, it acted as the springboard for Adele's career and has become a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

Sure, it might be coated in gloss but underneath is a perfectly written pop song. Given a remix by Jamie xx, his treatment was then turned into a bashment workout as the summer began to rain down.

However the most unusual rendition must surely come from Patti Smith. The punk pioneer is no stranger to tackling sacred texts, having ripped Them's garage anthem 'Gloria' apart on an early single.

Now Patti Smith has turned her sights on Adele. Performing in Castle Clinton (via The Village Voice) the avant garde singer threw in a version of 'Rolling In The Deep' which apparently had members of the audience gasping.

A straight, very subdued cover it puts Patti Smith's unmistakable voice to the fore. Footage has subsequently emerged online and sure, she forgets the words a few times but isn't that what punk was all about in the first place?
