New footage of Kwes working in the studio has emerged, courtesy of Red Bull series ‘The Producers’.
For such a young producer, Kwes already boasts a glittering CV. The beatsmith carved up a mixtape with Micachu, before an invitation from Damon Albarn took Kwes out to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A fixture on the ‘Kinshasa One Two’ album, Kwes was snapped up by Warp recently. Working on his debut album, Red Bull series ‘The Producers’ tracked the young artist down to his studio in London.
Talking about his approach to making music, Kwes was joined by a number of collaborators including Ghostpoet, DELS and Micachu. Watch a trailer below…

Meanwhile, Kwes recently spoke to ClashMusic about his time in DR Congo for our Global Playlist series.
Reflecting on the trip, Kwes discussed the parallels between Western and African music. “I think while I was over there – not to be clichéd – but I think I experienced the funk there” he stated.
“The word ‘funk’ is said to come from an African word which means ‘smell’. That’s a Congolese word – it could be a Ningala word – but it’s definitely derived from a Congolese language. I think we kind of fully experienced the purest form of that, the purest form of what became pop music today.”
