Hozier performed a version of The Pogues’ classic ‘Fairytale Of New York’ on Saturday Night Live over the weekend.
The Irish songwriter was the musical guest for the pre-Christmas special, and rose to the occasion with something special.
Performing one of his own songs, Hozier then moved into a version of ‘Fairytale Of New York’. A sombre, stripped down version that leaned on the band’s Irish heritage, it sent mid-winter chills down the spines of those in the audience, and at home.
A beautiful take on the song, Hozier made a minor lyric change – he’s got a huge LGBT fanbase, and no doubt wanted to honour that.
A word here and there doesn’t alter the emotional heft of the source material, or the respect Hozier seems to imbue into every single word.
