The Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne has posted a bizarre new video showing him performing a classic Guided By Voices track.
Guided By Voices had one of the lengthiest yet shambolic careers of any American indie rock group. For more than two decades the band carved out a sterling reputation built on their spiky power pop.
Releasing countless albums and going through several different line ups, Guided By Voices finally split in 2001. However the band have decided to get back together for a short series of shows, inspired by label Matador’s 21st birthday.
The move has prompted a wave of nostalgia for the band. Guided By Voices were a virtual institution, with lead singer Robert Pollard’s astonishing work rate already the stuff of indie rock legend.
A host of tributes to the band have been arranged, with an all star compilation in the works. Featuring a number of big name acts tackling Guided By Voices material, the album will contain a contribution from The Flaming Lips.
The Oklahoma band have decided to cover ‘Smothered In Hugs’ with their interpretation being a typically psychedelic rendition. Due to be released on No More Fake Labels, the album will also contain a contribution from Kelley Deal.
Meanwhile, The Flaming Lips have gone as far as releasing a video of them recording the song. Featuring singer Wayne Coyne’s lips, the footage is quite bizarre and was released with a message from the frontman saying: “Spent the morning recording some singing for Guided by Voices tribute record.”

Guided By Voices were initially set to play a one off set in Las Vegas as part of Matador’s birthday celebrations. However the excitement caused by this announcement prompted the band to confirm a handful of extra dates.
Led by Robert Pollard, the line up is drawn from the classic mid 90s period of the group.
