Watch: Early Kraftwerk Clips

Before the synths...

New clips have emerged showing an early incarnation of Kraftwerk before they turned electronic.

Kraftwerk are one of the most influential groups of all time. The German band helped introduce the world to electronic music, even building their own instruments and eventually their own studio.

Releasing a string of seminal albums, the band are cited as an influence by everyone from Aphex Twin to U2. Now new clips have emerged showing Kraftwerk before they began working with synths.

Initially a straight forward hippy rock group, Kraftwerk’s early influences included The Grateful Dead and art rock icons The Velvet Underground. The band play with guitars, allowing track times to stretch beyond the ten minute mark.

Languid, laid back and loose the recordings show Kraftwerk before they found their true voice. Hallmarks of the Krautrock sound emerge, but the songs themselves are shambling, without a tight structure.

Two clips have emerged on Dangerous Minds. The results are fascinating, with Kraftwerk shown before the disciplined suits of their ‘Autobahn’ era.
