The recent Sony DADC warehouse fire has begun to affect the release schedule.
The riots in London on Monday (August 8th) caused widespread damage and disturbances. However the fire at a Sony DADC Warehouse was perhaps the most shocking incident from a night of violence.
Looters broke into the three story warehouse, causing a fire that burned the Enfield building to the ground. Used by distribution service PIAS, the result has left almost a hundred independent labels with almost no stock.
The full list of labels was released yesterday (August 9th) and made for sobering reading. Amongst the institutions left with a serious shortfall in stock were Domino, who have been adjusting their release schedule accordingly.
Still struggling to cope, the label has issued the following statement: “While relieved that no-one was injured in the incident, we’re upset about the loss and destruction of our stock, and thinking of our friends at other independent labels who were also affected by the fire.”
Amongst the more pressing concerns, Domino have been forced to adjust the release of the new Arctic Monkeys single ‘The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala’. Physical stock has been severely depleted, meaning that no copies can be shipped to record shops.
Available solely online, the news is the first of many expected adjustments to the release schedule.
Elsewhere, hugely respected Scottish indie label Chemikal Underground have released a powerful statement. “The destruction of the SONY/DADC warehouse in Enfield last night and with it, the stock belonging to dozens of great independent labels distributed by PIAS UK, represents a sad and frustratingly bitter blow to the music industry at a time when it can least afford it.”
“While we’ve lost a considerable chunk of our own back catalogue in addition to stock of our more recent titles, the repercussions of last night’s events will be felt by all labels and retailers up and down the country for months to come. We also have enormous sympathy for PIAS itself: a wonderful independent distributor and an unfailingly supportive partner for Chemikal Underground over the last twelve years.”
Chemikal Underground then join AIM’s call for music fans to aid independent labels by purchasing an album online as soon as possible. While the stock may be insured, the legal process will result in a shortfall of cash which could drag some of your favourite labels into bankruptcy.
