Viola Beach look likely to notch up a posthumous number one album.
The four-piece sadly lost their lives in an accident earlier this year, with their tour van crashing while travelling through Scandinavia.
Since then, the wave of grief has been astonishing. Something about the tale of four friends dying while doing what they loved touched people far beyond their immediate sphere, with Coldplay turning a segment of their Glastonbury performance into a tribute to the band.
A full length album was compiled from available recordings, and huge first day sales could propel Viola Beach to an emotional number one slot.
'Viola Beach' sold 6000 copies more than its nearest challenger, with the Warrington band likely to hold onto their lead.
Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company comments: “Following the terribly tragic events of February, everyone will have been rooting for the Viola Beach album this week, so it’s fantastic news that it is doing so well – I’m sure we will all be keeping our fingers crossed that it can hold on at Number 1.”
