Victoria Canal will release her debut album ‘Slowly, It Dawns’ this winter.
The songwriter caught our attention with her wonderful opening releases, blending emotive, open lyricism with some absorbing melodies. Onstage, she’s endlessly relatable – a funny, wry, over-sharer, Victoria seems to take each audience into her heart.
Out on January 17th, debut album ‘Slowly, It Dawns’ finds Victoria Canal offering up her full, undiluted self. In a note, she explains: “I’m trying to be honest and unapologetic about what I want to put out there, whether it’s wholesome, sexy, loud, quiet, if I’m being femme or masc; I don’t want to apologise for it.”
Penned over a three year period and constructed somewhere between London and Los Angeles, the title offers a note of hard-earned optimism. “Life does feel like the sun rising,” she shares. “You come into the world with very little clarity on the way things are – everything’s a little hazy and confusing. Then, as you get older, your eyes adjust to what life is; it gets messy and complicated, then spiritual and expansive.”
New single ‘Cake’ is out now, and it finds Victoria Canal revelling in late night (or early morning) escapism – but it’s matched to an awareness of incoming darkness, too. “It’s 6am, you’re still going on a night out and everything’s gone a little too wonky… ‘Cake’ is the bottled up feeling of dreading (and therefore adamantly avoiding) going back to adult responsibilities, and indeed the crushing weight of the world. It’s the desperate desire to hold onto the escape just a little bit longer, even as it starts to go sour.”
Tune in now.
