Legendary Scottish indie group The Vaselines are set to re-issue their Sub Pop compilation ‘The Way Of The Vaselines’.
Forming in Edinburgh in 1986, The Vaselines embodies the shambling ethos of the post-Orange Juice Scottish indie scene. Their sparse back catalogue includes just two EPs and one album, but the band’s material has taken on a life of its own.
Becoming cult heroes in the United States, Kurt Cobain took up the band’s cause championing their music in the press. Singer Eugene Kelly even appeared onstage with Nirvana at the Reading Festival in 1991.
‘The Way Of The Vaselines’ collects the group’s entire discography. Originally released as ‘Enter The Vaselines’ on Sub Pop, it cemented the American underground’s love affair with the band.
In addition to their studio material, the new album also contains rare live cuts and demos including entire gigs in London and Bristol.
The Vaselines rarely perform live. Since 1990, the group have only performed together onstage once – at Scotland’s Tigerfest last year. Creative pairing Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee use different rhythm sections, with members of Bell & Sebastian taking to the stage with the group on one occasion.
The Vaselines are due to release their new album ‘The Way Of The Vaselines’ on May 4th. The band have also confirmed the following live date:
