TV On The Radio have spawned another side project with the news that Kyp Malone is to release a new solo album.
Formed in Brooklyn, TV On The Radio are one of the most celebrated bands in America. The group’s blend of rock, soul, hip hop and electronic influences have seen them break new ground when many contemporaries are content to re-tread old trends.
The band’s 2006 album ‘Return To Cookie Mountain’ won the band a devoted fan base, thrilling by TV On The Radio’s musical invention and clear humour. However it was last year’s album ‘Dear Science’ which threw the band into the mainstream.
A stunning album, it is the band’s most completely realised effort yet and won new fans across the globe. Almost nudging its way into the Billboard Top Ten, ‘Dear Science’ also became the band’s first Top 40 effort in the UK.
However the group have also been continually involved in side projects. Dave Sitek is at the creative core of TV On The Radio, and when not working with the band he is a full time producer.
Sitek’s Brooklyn studio had inspired a wealth of local talent before closing its doors earlier this year. A victim of spiralling rents, the studio left behind it a sterling musical legacy that recently spawned Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ ‘Its Blitz’.
Now it seems that guitarist Kyp Malone is ready to release his new solo album. The project is named Rain Machine and for his debut solo album the musician has recruited Ian Brennan, who has previously worked with Lucinda Williams.
“I’ve been writing and recording songs alone since I moved to NYC in 2000, at first alone because I didn’t know anyone, then through the years by choice because of a particular freedom that going it alone afforded,” Malone said in a statement.
“I’ve played regularly since then, at first under the name Black Lights until some kids in Texas told me they were already using that name. Then under my own name but I didn’t like how ‘Kyp Malone’ looked on mock ups of t-shirts and fliers, thus Rain Machine.”
When describing the sounds of his solo material, Malone said that it is “a nearly full spectrum of frequencies audible to the human ear – a reflection of a variety of emotions and situations real and imagined, some rhythm and some rhyme.”
However this news is not expected to affect TV On The Radio in any way. The band are due to complete a full scale United States tour this summer as expected.
Kyp Malone will release his debut album ‘Rain Machine’ through -Anti Records later this year.
