Tunng have decided to collect their BBC sessions onto the new compilation ‘This Is Tunng… Live From The BBC’.
Way back when – before the internet – there were precious few outlets for new music in the UK. A hub for state broadcasting, a BBC session could let to huge exposure if a talented young group gave a great performance.
Enshrined in music mythology, the humble BBC session retains a romantic allure. Tunng know this more than most, using the broadcaster as a bedding in ground for new material, allowing themselves to experiment in front of millions.
Now the English collective have confirmed plans to collect each of their BBC sessions to date on a new album. ‘This Is Tunng… Live At The BBC’ mixes intimate acoustic sessions with full band tracks, including an unusual collaboration.
A chance meeting with Tinariwen prompted a full scale collaboration between the two acts, with the BBC catching the unit live in concert.
As if that wasn’t enough, BBC legend Bob Harris could well be on one track… “I seem to remember him ‘playing’ a telephone directory along to one of our songs,” says Phil from the band. “The Tinariwen session was amazing, because we didn’t have a clue what we were going to play. It was so great just hearing it slowly come together.”
Due out next month, Tunng have decided to preview the compilation with a free download. Grab ‘Bullets’ below…
