Track Of The Day 9/3 – Taffy

Japanese Shoegaze

It may have began in the Thames Valley, but shoegaze has grown to become an international scene.

A resurgence across the past decade has seen outposts spring up in every continent, all speaking the international language of fuzz. The Japanese scene has been producing the goods for years, with the likes of Clams and – more recently – Hotel Mexico gaining headlines far beyond the insular scene.

And now Taffy seek to emulate them. Veterans of several different outfits, the band have the same chugging, rock driven edge which rippled through Swervedriver but with a pop heart.

Sure, there’s a sense of abstraction in there too but each Taffy song comes with hooks that grab you and refuse to be shaken off.

Now focussed on the UK, Taffy recently paired off with Club AC30. Specialists in anything touched by the legacy of shoegaze, the imprint is already responsible for releases from Ringo Deathstarr and The Megaphonic Thrift.

Upcoming single ‘So Long’ is the first track to emerge from recent album sessions. Taffy hone their noise instincts into three minutes of sheer fuzzed up bliss – a suitably raucous primer ahead of debut album ‘Sunset Caramel’ on May 7th.

As a preview, ClashMusic have grabbed ‘HaaH’. All peacock strut and guitar bite, Taffy prove that shoegaze acts can rock out with the best of them.
