Track Of The Day 9/12 – Matthew Dear

A Glance At His New EP

Matthew Dear likes to keep us on our toes.

Last time we sat down with the producer, Matthew Dear had delivered ‘Black City’. A techno driven paean to urban alienation, the album was a study in romanticism slowly collapsing back under the weight of its own illusion.

A stark view, ‘Black City’ was followed by extensive touring. Seeming to re-discover his pop touch along the way, Matthew Dear decided that the time was right to lay down a new EP.

Deciding to relinquish control in the new studio, ‘Headcage’ is unusually collaborative. Working in Nicolas Vernhes’ famed Rare Book Room studio, Matthew Dear was joined by co-producers Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid.

With credits including The Knife and Blonde Redhead, Swedish duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid have added a powerful sense of electro noir to proceedings,

Using a guest vocalist for the first time, Matthew Dear hooked up with Jonny Pierce from The Drums. Famed for his indie pop yelp, the producer uses Pierce in an unusual way pushing the frontman out of his comfort zone.

Moving from dub abstraction to distorted pop, ‘Headcage’ is a short but inventive return from Matthew Dear. Due to be released on January 17th, the EP will be accompanied by visuals from London-based director Morgan Beringer.

For now, though, fans have to make do with a short teaser. Title cut ‘Headcage’ is available as a free download, with the future-pop abstractions of Matthew Dear closing out another week’s selections for ‘Track Of The Day’.
