All of a sudden, ‘indie’ seems to be a dirty word.
Guitars are languishing in wardrobes across the country, with one time indie die-hards turning into synth-pop divas overnight. It’s a strange old time…
Which is why a band like Tall Ships are so vital. The Brighton three piece have a play-anywhere-at-any-time attitude that has allowed them to build up a terrifically loyal fanbase.
Clash caught them in action at London sweatbox The Nest recently, and Tall Ships played a set of rare power, poise and execution. The band have the same itchy math-derived tempos that fuel Foals, but with a songwriting bite that recalls The Cribs.
Heading into the studio recently, Tall Ships completed work on a batch of new material. Upcoming single ‘T=0’ – see, the math reference wasn’t spurious after all! – is the first new cut to emerge.
Big Scary Monsters / Blood & Biscuits are to partner on the new release, which will be pressed onto seven inch vinyl. Only 500 copies will be available, with Tall Ships themselves helping out with the packaging.
The track itself? Glad you asked…
ClashMusic are pleased to première ‘T=0’. Set to drop on April 16th, the single opens with a steady pulse on the hi-hat, before a looping guitar riffs comes roaring out of the speakers.
On the surface a fairly simple indie rock track, there’s enough tricks and pulls here to let you know that this is still a Tall Ships effort. Fading into the chatter of the crowd, ‘T=0’ is a powerful return from a band who know where their heart lies – and stick with it.
Listen to it now…
