Track Of The Day 8/11 – younghusband

Fuzzed Up Indie Pop

London is awash with new groups right now.

Provoked by a wave of inspiring music from the States, it seems that a new generation are probing the shoegaze sound. A youthful four piece, younghusband are often lumped in with a dream pop revival but in reality the band’s music is too distinct, too complex to place in any one scene.

The band were only formed last year, with younghusband making their live debut at Truck festival. Since then, the London group have bolstered their live sound while also forging ties with some cult labels.

Releasing a limited edition seven inch on Too Pure earlier this year, younghusband have a blissed out feel but with a defiantly noisy edge. As much inspired by Sonic Youth as Kevin Shields, the band have now completed work on a new release.

Acclaimed London label Sonic Cathedral have stepped in to support the band, with the imprint handling the release of the four track ‘Crystal’ EP. Available on double 7” vinyl and digital download, ‘Crystal’ was recorded with Jimmy Robertson and The Oscillation’s Demian Castellanos during the summer in a Hackney studio.

The influences running through the EP cross a broad range of sounds. Sure, there are traces of dream pop and even staring at shoes, but younghusband mix in Kraut, psych and even ambient textures.

‘Tropic Of Cancer’ is a case in point. Fuzzed up indie pop, younghusband have a garage edge which sits somewhere between Nuggets and Mudhoney.
